Following the end of official censorship in 1988û1989, the number of newspapers and magazines has soared. Some are foreign-owned; most are fiercely independent and critical of government policy. The TV broadcasting service is nominally independent, but in practice the state controls its news coverage. Public pressure to open frequencies to private local TV and radio networks is currently growing.
